Duane Michals:
Duane Michals is a photographic innovator, who is widely known for his series, exposures and text. He was firstly heavy inspired by photojournalism, which inevitably prompted him to create his sequences series, in a frame to frame format. His work has been exhibited globally, while also winning awards such as the International Center of Photography Infinity Award for Art in 1989.
This series 'Things Are Queer', was intentionally photographed underexposed to create a sense of peculiarity. The contrast between the bright whites of the bathroom and the darkness of the negative space in between creates this tension of the unknown and yet also a sense of curiosity. The juxtaposing sizes of the man and the bathroom, can be seen as visually confusing and yet the negative space behind the man can emphasis that there is more to the story than what is seen to the eye. These effective and well thought out images, manipulate the viewer into feeling a certain way, despite the simple concept. The use of the focal length here shows the viewer that not everything looks how it seems and that you only get to see what they want you to see. After seeing the man in the dark and gloomy corridor, which adds to the mystery and the unknown, it shows a bright light towards the end of the tunnel, causing your eyes to be drawn inward and focused into the center, while also making a distraction from the mystery, capturing your attention; the eye catching light that he is walking towards can suggest that the end is coming close. Next he shows the exact same photo of the man in the corridor, instead this time above the sink in the first image, making it a full never ending loop. I love the creativity of this series and the use of his camera skills to show the viewer what he wants to see, and manipulating the viewer into a false sense of reality.
I want to try and creatively try and recreate his work in a way in a photobook format while not directly going picture to picture but have them throughout the whole book entirely.
